How to Start an Online Store in Lebanon
Plan an online store in Lebanon: choose a platform, take payments with cash on delivery or cards, set delivery, write Arabic and English pages and launch.
Selling online in Lebanon is different from selling in most countries. Many customers still prefer to pay on delivery, prices are often set in dollars, addresses are described by landmarks, and Instagram and WhatsApp are where most orders start. A store built around those habits sells more than a copy of a foreign template.
This guide walks you through the decisions in the order you will face them. At KamiKode, online stores start from $1,800, and every project gets a written quote with the running costs before work begins.
1. Decide what you sell and who buys it
Start with a short, honest list:
- Which 10 to 30 products will you launch with? You can add more later
- Who is the customer, and where do they live: Lebanon only, or also the diaspora?
- How will you deliver, and how long will it take?
- What makes you different from the same product on Instagram or Dubizzle?
Stores that begin with a focused range and good photos usually beat stores that list everything badly.
2. Choose your platform
There is no single best platform, only the right one for your size and team.
| Platform | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | A quick launch and easy daily running | A monthly subscription, no Shopify Payments in Lebanon, so a third-party gateway and its fees |
| WooCommerce (WordPress) | Full control and no platform fee | Hosting, updates and security are your job, or your agency's |
| Custom build | Wholesale pricing, product builders, links to your own systems | Higher cost and a longer build |
Whichever you choose, make sure the domain, the store and the customer list are registered in your name. Our guide on choosing a web development company in Lebanon explains what to ask.
3. Set your prices and currency
Many Lebanese stores price in US dollars and accept payment in dollars or in Lebanese pounds at a stated rate. Whatever you choose, show it clearly on every product and in the cart, say which exchange rate you use if you accept pounds, and update it when it changes. A customer who sees a different total at checkout leaves.
4. Plan how customers will pay
Payments are the part that surprises people most. Offer a few options and be transparent about each:
- Cash on delivery: still the habit for many buyers, and the easiest to start with. Confirm large orders by phone or WhatsApp first to avoid refused deliveries
- Card payments: these need a payment gateway that serves Lebanese businesses. Providers often ask for a registered company and have their own fees and approval time, so ask early
- Wallets and transfer services: some, such as Whish, offer a plugin for Shopify stores, and others work through a payment link you confirm by hand. Availability changes, so check with the provider before you build around it
- WhatsApp ordering: a button that sends the product or cart to your WhatsApp for customers who want to chat first. See how to use WhatsApp for your business website
Keep checkout as short as possible: name, phone, address with a landmark, and a payment choice.
5. Set up delivery
Customers decide to buy or leave based on delivery. Decide before launch:
- Which areas you deliver to, and the fee for each zone
- A free-delivery threshold, which raises the value of each order
- Your delivery time, stated honestly
- Whether you use your own drivers or a courier company
- What happens when nobody answers at the door
Ask for a phone number and a landmark at checkout. Addresses without street numbers are common, and a good landmark saves a failed delivery.
6. Write product pages that sell
Each product page should answer a buyer's questions without a phone call:
- Several real photos, including one that shows size
- A clear title in the words customers search for
- The price, the available sizes or colors and whether it is in stock
- Delivery time, return rules and a contact button near the buy button
- Honest reviews from real customers, as they arrive
7. Offer Arabic and English
Shoppers in Lebanon use both languages, and some buy only in one. Give the store a full Arabic version with right-to-left layout and its own addresses, not an automatic translation. Read our guide to a bilingual Arabic and English website for how this works and why it helps your Google results.
8. Publish the legal pages
A store takes money and personal data, so customers and card providers expect to find your Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Refund Policy linked from the footer. State how returns and exchanges work, who pays for shipping on a return, and how long a refund takes. Have a Lebanese lawyer review them, since consumer protection and data rules apply to your store.
9. Get found
An online store with no visitors makes no sales. Plan these from the start:
- Google: give every product and category its own page with a clear title and description, and follow our SEO guide for Lebanon. If you also have a shop or showroom, set up your Google Business Profile
- Instagram and Facebook: use them to show products in use and send people to your store, not only to take orders in direct messages
- WhatsApp: reply fast, and use it to follow up on abandoned enquiries
- Speed: most visitors arrive on a phone, so test the store on mobile data. See why websites are slow on mobile
10. Test and launch
Before you announce the store, place real test orders:
- Order each payment method from a phone, in Arabic and in English
- Check that the confirmation arrives by email and that you get a notification
- Try an address without a street number
- Test a return from start to finish
- Check the total, the delivery fee and the currency on every step
After launch, keep the store updated and secure. Our guide to a website maintenance checklist lists what to do monthly.
The short version
Start with a focused range, pick a platform you can run, price in a clear currency, offer cash on delivery plus one digital option, set honest delivery zones, write in Arabic and English, publish your legal pages, and test every order path before you launch.
