WhatsApp for Business: Turn Visitors into Chats
How to use WhatsApp to turn website visitors into customers: click-to-chat links, the WhatsApp Business app, quick replies and tracking what works.
For many customers in Lebanon and across the region, WhatsApp is the most natural way to contact a business. Asking them to fill in a long form or wait for an email can lose a sale that a two-line chat would have won.
Here is how to connect your website to WhatsApp properly, and how to handle the conversations that follow.
Use the WhatsApp Business app
If you still run your business from a personal WhatsApp account, switch to the free WhatsApp Business app. It adds a business profile with your address, hours and website, a catalog for your products or services, quick replies, labels to organize chats, and automatic greeting and away messages.
For larger teams that need several people on one number, or a connection to other systems, the next step is the WhatsApp Business Platform (API), usually through an approved provider.
Create a click-to-chat link
WhatsApp offers a simple link format that opens a chat with your number: wa.me/ followed by your full number in international format, without the plus sign, spaces or leading zeros. For a Lebanese number, that means it starts with 961.
You can also add a ready-made message, so the customer only has to press send, for example "Hi, I'd like to ask about your services". The text goes after ?text= at the end of the link, encoded for the web. Ready-made messages also tell you which page or campaign a chat came from.
Put WhatsApp where customers need it
A single icon in the footer is easy to miss. Place WhatsApp where people decide to get in touch:
- A floating button on desktop, and a fixed contact bar at the bottom of the screen on phones
- Next to every price, product or service
- On your contact page, alongside phone and email
- In your Instagram bio, your Google Business Profile and your email signature
Keep the form too. Some customers prefer it, especially for detailed requests or outside working hours.
Reply fast, and set expectations
WhatsApp's main advantage is speed, and a slow reply cancels it out. Set a greeting message that thanks the customer and says when you will reply, and an away message for outside working hours. Use quick replies for the questions you answer every day, such as prices, location and delivery.
Turn chats into customers
A chat is a potential customer, not just a question. Ask what they need, suggest the next step (a quote, a visit or a call), and follow up if they go quiet. Use labels such as "new", "quote sent" and "customer" so nobody is forgotten.
Measure what WhatsApp brings
Count how many chats start from your website each month, and how many become customers. Website analytics can record clicks on WhatsApp buttons, and a different ready-made message for each page or ad shows which ones work best.
Respect your customers' privacy
Only message people who contacted you or agreed to hear from you, and never add customers to broadcast lists or groups without their permission. If your website links to WhatsApp, mention it in your privacy policy. Unwanted messages can also get your number reported and restricted.
